Pack It Up, Pack It In

There's an old adage from the world of backpacking that says the bigger the bag, the more you need. Meaning if you dig out your 5,000 cubic inch pack, you will definitely find a whole bunch of stuff you 'need' to fill it, thus enuring a miserable trip as you haul 70 pounds around while going up and down the trail. A smaller pack forces you to distill your gear down to the very basics, and as a result, you cut your weight by a third or more, and your knees and shoulders and hips are much happier for it.

Let's extrapolate this theory to our current situation. A typical car camping trip involves shoving everything into the trunk and the empty crannies of the backseat. Maybe a car-top carrier is involved. It's not a ton of space once you get tents and coolers and camp chairs and food involved, but you make it work. Now imagine you are towing a trailer behind you, one with storage built into its very bones and all types of flat space to accommodate a legion of Rubbermaid containers. Things get real packed, real fast.

And this isn't even all of it. I'd share more, but I have to keep packing. Almost time to go!
