Indiana, Cones and a Temple of Dunes

How's that for a punny title? I still got it!

First off, apologies to Nana for only snapping one pic from our brief stopover in Hornell. To say we were in a state of chaos would be an understatement. Here's what I got:

Yup, not even sure why I took this photo, but this is how I documented our first stop. Riveting stuff. Sorry, Nana.

I didn't know what to expect from Indiana Dunes. My brain is still wrapping itself around the fact that Lake Michigan looks like an ocean, complete with waves, beach town vibes and volleyball. Chicago floating on the horizon was a bonus, giving everything an extra cool sci-fi feel.

It was a beautiful place to relax for a day, and it would have been great to spend more time. But this portion of our journey is all about progress, so after our brief respite it was time to pack up and go.

But the whole trip almost came to a grinding halt when we first arrived at our campsite. The Buffalo is very low-tech, with very few un-fixable parts that can fail. Well, guess what broke on day one?

There's a little piece of plastic that slides along a track and holds up side of a bed end. I swear, it looks like a rectangle of white cutting board, riveted to the metal track. That cheap piece of plastic is mega important, however. Without it, as far as I can tell, the bed platform has no attachment points to the rest of the camper when extended. This, as you can imagine, is a large problem, bordering on catastrophic. I was able to cut away part of the piece, and that allowed us to carefully set up the camper for our stay in the Dunes. But I think we will need a more permanent fix if we want to make it across the country and back.

Once we got past the facts of getting in way too late, setting up in the dark, the camper falling apart and being consumed by mosquitos, the rest of the stay was great. The beaches were expansive and gorgeous, the water was refreshing, and the ice cream was surprisingly good for a Baskin Robbins that only had 11 of their famous 32 flavors. Onwards to Minnesota!

A stubborn animal and a buffalo.
